Golden Retrievers - Best Mellow Dog for You

Updated on April 17, 2013

Golden Retrievers Always Popular

When thinking about getting a new dog for the family, the first dog that almost always comes to mind is a Golden Retriever. There is a good reason the Golden Retriever is among the top 5 most popular breeds.

Golden Retrievers are happy mellow dogs that almost look like there smiling.Their affectionate and loving personality, makes a Golden Retrievers a lot of fun to be around.

A Golden Retriever is a large breed dog that was originally bred to retrieve waterfowl. They make fantastic family pets and will reward their owners with a lifetime of affection and companionship.

Golden Retriever - Fun Loving Water Dog

Golden Retrievers are generally very easy to train and can be often found in the show ring. They are truly beautiful dogs and their colors can range from a light golden, to a magnificent red.

This breed is loyal to their family, and great with kids. These are dogs that truly seek your attention and will most undoubtedly get themselves into trouble if left unattended for long periods of time and will be most unhappy.

If you have a pond or creek on your property, a Golden Retriever will be in heaven. These dogs love water and in fact will actively seek it out for a quick swim. For this reason, it is important to have a strong fence to keep your Golden safely at home and out of harms way.

Golden Retriever - Puppy Boot-camp

After bringing home a new Golden Retriever pup, you may have your work cut out for you. These are very high energy dogs until they begin to mellow out at approximately three years of age. While your Golden Retriever pup is young, be sure daily exercise is mandatory to burn off excess energy. This will lead to a happy pup and a happy household that remains in one piece.

Rescuing an older pup or adult Golden Retriever may spare some of the destruction that inevitably comes from raising a little puppy with too little time for exercise.

As soon as your pup is old enough, an obedience will make for a better behaved Golden Retriever when fully grown. You will be rewarded by a dog that will provide undying love, enjoy long hikes through the woods, walks on the beach, summer camping trips and best of all, have their special person to snuggle with.

The Downside of Owning a Golden Retriever

Things that are not so great about having a Golden Retrievers in the household?

A Golden Retriever's beautiful long flowing coat, will require constant brushing to keep shedding in check. Some people may find dog hair objectionable in the house so be sure to give this a consideration before choosing a Golden Retriever. A Standard Poodle may be a better choice as they absolutely do not shed any hair although they require frequent grooming.

Golden Retrievers are usually very friendly dogs and they generally don't make the best watch dogs, although, there are always exceptions.

Golden Retrievers are a very high energy dog that will require plenty of exercise to keep their energy levels in check.

As with any pure breed dog, they can have certain health issues. Only deal with reputable breeders that knows and love the breed and who are willing to provide all documentation of testing for known hereditary conditions in the parents.

Be sure to learn as much as you can about this wonderful breed before you bring your new bundle of joy home. In my opinion you will be hard pressed to find a better dog and lifetime companion than a Golden Retriever.
