Targeting Niche HubPages

Before you even start to write a hub, do a search on HubPages on the subject you would like to write about and look to see how many hubs are already written. If there are 1000 hubs on that particular topic, and unless you or your hub has a really high score, your hub will not be easy to find and will likely end up towards the end of the list. People will need to search through page after page of similar topics just to find your hub. By then, most people will have already given up or have found what they were looking for in the first few pages of results. This is why search engine optimization (SEO) is so important and the holy grail of web design. If people can't find your hub or website, they are not going to read it. By finding a niche that does not have many hubs written on a particular subject, and the better your hub is, the faster it will get to the top of the list where more people will see it.

The use of good keywords, that help people find your hub when they search for it is also very important. The more relevant the key words are the better. Always try to use as many keywords as you can in your hubs. Google offers a great tool that shows how many times in a month people have searched for certain keywords or phrases. Use this tool to add these highest ranking key words to your hubs so more people will find them. In the example photo below, see where discus fish has 165,000 search results a month globally. If for example you did not enter discus fish as one of your keywords, rather you only entered discus fishes. The total monthly searches for that key word dropped down to only 1,600 a month. This would equate to a much smaller pool of people potentially finding your hub on discus fish.

Equally if not more important is target key words that have a high payout. So when someone does click on your ads, you will get paid more than a few cents. Keywords that pay high are listed all over google. Don't over saturate your hubs with keywords that have no relevance to your topics. Search Engines tend to view this as spam and it will lower you ranking there as well. Rule of thumb is use key words about 5% to the rest of your subject in your HubPages.

Keep your HubsPages Interesting and Easy to Read

The internet these days is filled with a lot of garbage. Original well written content is out there but you have to wade through a lot of spam and trash to find it. Kind of reminds me of gold panning, for every piece of gold you find, you need to throw a lot of dirt out of your pan. Have you ever read a legal document, you know how frustrating and time consuming those can be. When writing your hubs make them easy to read and comprehend. Try to use simple words so the average reader understands what your are trying to convey. Most of all don't copy and paste from another site as this will really hurt your overall score.

Make sure your titles splash out and grab the readers attention. The title and the opening paragraph is the most important piece of your hub. If you don't grab the readers attention and pull him in within the first 10 seconds, they will be gone. Always double check or have someone else check your spelling, grammar and punctuation before you publish your hub. This will make your hub look great and make you look like a pro. While writing your hubs, focus on doing the best you can on each hub rather than your overall score. Even after your hub is published you can go back and rewrite parts of it or add more content to make it better. Search engines tend to rank sites with new content higher than static ones.

Most of all, don't worry about making any money in the beginning. Sometimes it can take quite a while for your hubs to even show up on the search engines. Focus on writing your hubs and doing a good job on each one. Don't publish too many at once as that can even count against your score as well. Don't get discouraged keep plugging away at it, and you will see your writing skills improve. Your score will eventually go up with time and effort following the simple tips in this guide.

Longer HubPages are Better than Short Ones

When writing a hub it is best if it fills the entire page. Hubs that tend to rank higher almost always contain a few pictures links and even a video or two. Assemble the content together so it flows, and when you are done you will have what looks like a single page mini website. Make good use of headings and titles to outline your hub and help your reader follow along. Try to incorporate keywords for your hub in your titles as this is something the search engines like to see and it will help improve your ranking with them as well.

Join the HubPages Community

Participating in the forums, asking and answering questions and leaving constructive feedback will all help. Be part of the community and take time to help new or struggling hubbers. Promote other peoples' hubs in your hubs by using hub karma. Doing all these things can contribute to your overall score and you will see your hub score go up even more. This all takes time and don't expect instant results, sometimes it may take a few hours to as long as a few day but it will all help.

Make Your HubPages Shine

Writing a hub or building a web page is very much like starting a new business. How may of us would go out rent a space in an industrial complex and put a sign on the door that said "Custom Widgets" and then sit back and wait for customers to show up? After writing your hub the real work begins. Time to do some advertising and marketing. Why do we need to do this with our hubs? When we have a lot of people visiting our hubs it can also can also help our overall hub scores.

A good way to promote your hubs is by backlinking your hub to various forums and blogs. Backlinks work best when the keyword contain the same subject as the blog you are on. For example if your hub is about Standard Poodles, back linking your hub on a site about coffee makers would have less of an effect on your SEO ranking, than if you posted it on a forum or blog about Standard Poodles.

Other good ways to promote your hub are places like digg, twitter, facebook and stumbleupon. Not only will backlinks help raise your SEO they will bring real people that see your link and will want to read what you have to say. Remember what I told you earlier about a catchy title and opening paragraph, this is equally important when it comes to promoting your hub with backlinks.

How to Manually Build HubPages Backlinks

Follow Me Follow You

One last tip is something I learned about twitter, if you follow people many will follow you back. It is a little harder on hub pages but I have seen the same principle applied here as well by various hubbers. The more followers you have, the more chances they will read your hub or tell their friends via twitter facebook or some other social networking site. With all those extra back links it could help land your hub on the first page of google search. Can you imagine what this would do for your hub score?

Thanks for all the kind words Jess. Many of these tips work great not only for hub pages but also on web pages as well. Search engines love dynamic and original content, over static pages. Thats why blogs work so well for seo rankings. Many blog themes can be made to look like websites and they are tons easier to manage. Adding new content is a breeze. Wordpress is the gold standard for blogs and offers a ton of free plugins to help mange and customize you site. See a sample of one I am currently working on at http://hot-trendz.com

Its definitely a matter of SEO, keyword research and how involved you are in the hubpages community. I think this is a great topic to bring up. Generally I find that the better your content is, and the more involvement you have on hubpages - The better your hub score is.

But I'm sure there are lots of other factors. Great hub!

Thanks so much for all the comments. When I started out it took me a while to get the hang of all this but the more you work at it, the easier it gets. If you are new to hub pages, be sure to also look at adding a tracking code to any of your outside links pointing to your hubs. In your settings there is a place to create a custom URL Tracker. Create one and be sure to included it in all your links to your hubs and any other people's hubs as well. This will really help increase your earning potential on hub pages.

Once you have a tracker here is how you insert it into the url. In the link to your hub and after the .com/ and before the word hub in the link you would put this: _yourtrackercode/

Hope you all have a great Thanksgiving ~dgicre

Thank you. Very useful and motivating. I just starting hubbing and I already see my score rising.

I also have given myself a daily goal of at least a hub a day or every other day since my schedule is tight, but I am making the time to hub. I love it so far.

Thanks again!

Happy to help. After you get your Hub score where you want it to be, try to set goals for your AdSense earnings. Every month I try to make just a little more than the month before. Have only been at this for a short while compared to some. When I first started out my goal was to make $3 dollars a month on AdSense. Now that I have doing this for about 5 months my last two months were close to $2. Still not where I want to be, but getting better over time. As you write more hubs and your Hub score increases, you will see your revenue increasing as well. Good luck to you!

Now I think I'm truly understanding google ranking strategy...the lightbulb just went on. Many other hubs gloss over the idea without concrete information. I'm excited to apply to my few hubs since I'm new to hubbing. I've done fairly well with traffic and this is just going to improve upon it. Thanks!
